China’s New Place in a World in Crisis
Publisher: ANU E Press | English | ISBN: 1921536960 | edition July 2009 | PDF | 486 pages | 6 mb

The world and China’s place in it have been transformed over the past year. The pressures for change have come from the most severe global financial crisis ever. The crisis has accelerated China’s emergence as a great power. But China and its global partners have yet to think or work through the consequences of its new position for the governance of world affairs. China’s New Place in a World in Crisis discusses and provides in-depth analysis of the following questions. How have China’s growth prospects been affected by the global crisis? How will the crisis and China’s response to it impact China’s major domestic issues, such as industrialisation, urbanisation and the reform of the state-owned sector of the economy? How will the crisis and the international community’s response to it affect the rapidly emerging new international order? What will be China’s, and other major developing countries’, new role? Can China and the world find a way of breaking the nexus between economic growth and environmental sustainability — especially on the issue of climate change?

The continuing impact of 9/11 and the subsequent anti-terrorism campaign have perceptively influenced U.S. security strategy and bilateral relationships with key Asian countries. While the United States has been “the” regional power since the end of World War II, there is some uncertainty about the relevance of that power at a time when Asian nations are attempting to foster greater regional cooperation and forge a stronger regional identity.
Given the political, economic, and security interests of the United States in the region, it is essential that both Americans and Asians contribute to solving problems and addressing challenges of mutual concern — from stability on the Korean peninsula, conflict in Afghanistan, and the global war on terror to energy security, environmental degradation, and trade.

In this comprehensive study, 15 African experts describe and analyse the military budgetary processes and degree of parliamentary oversight and control in nine countries of Africa, spanning across all the continent's sub-regions. Each case study addresses a wide range of questions, such as the roles of the ministries of finance, budget offices, audit departments and external actors in the military budgetary processes, the extent of compliance with standard public expenditure management procedures, and how well official military expenditure figures reflect the true economic resources devoted to military activities in these countries.

In March 2005 the Hoover Institution Archives announced a new initiative, the Modern China Archives and Special Collections, which includes archival and other special materials concerning the Republic of China from 1911 to 1949, Taiwan from 1949 to the present, and the evolution of mainland China from 1949 to the present.
The Hoover Institution undertook this initiative because, for many decades, its archives has collected and preserved a rich collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Western documents—including the private papers of individuals as well as the personal documents and official records of leaders and statesmen, government officials, missionaries, and engineers—related to the above periods.

Being Muslim in America
Publisher: Uni ted StateS department of State | English | edition 2009 | PDF | 36 pages | 6 mb

The young women pictured on our cover are both Muslim. They live near Detroit, Michigan, in a community with many Arab-American residents. Each expresses her faith in her own way, with a combination of traditional and modern dress.
Here, they compete fiercely on the basketball court in a sport that blends individual skills and team effort. They - along with the other men, women, and children in this publication - demonstrate every day what it is like to be Muslim in America.
“I Am an American With a Muslim Soul”
I love America not because I am under the illusion that it is perfect, but because it allows me — the child of Muslim immigrants from India — to participate in its progress, to carve a place in its promise, to play a role in its possibility.
John Winthrop, one of the earliest European settlers in America, gave voice to this sense of possibility. He told his compatriots that their society would be like a city upon a hill, a beacon for the world. It was a hope rooted in Winthrop’s Christian faith, and no doubt he imagined his city on a hill with a steeple in the center.

Caught in the Crossfire: Adrian Scott and the Politics of Americanism in 1940s Hollywood
Publisher: Columbia University Press | English | ISBN: 0231142501 | edition January 27, 2009 | PDF | 444 pages | 2 mb

In the summer of 1947, Crossfire, a controversial thriller exposing American anti-Semitism, was a critical and box-office hit, and RKO producer Adrian Scott was at the pinnacle of his career. Within several months, however, Scott became infamous as a member of the Hollywood Ten, blacklisted for his refusal to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Caught in the Crossfire: Adrian Scott and the Politics of Americanism in 1940s Hollywood reconstructs the production and reception of Scott's major films, exploring the political and creative challenges faced by Hollywood radicals within the studio system and reassessing the relationship among film noir, antifascism, anticommunism, and the politics of Americanism.

China at War by Freda Utley
China at War by Freda Utley
Publisher: Faber and Faber | English | ASIN: B0006DB1AO | edition 1939 | PDF (scan) | 306 pages | 20 mb

This book does not attempt an adequate analysis of China’s social and political structure, nor does it give an account of her economic problems. My visit to China was too short, and the horrors of the war too close, for any cold appraisal of the ills of China. I have endeavoured to describe, as truthfully as possible , what I saw in China; and to make others see the tragedy now being enacted in the Far East.
That life in China in war-time was not all sadness and horror, but had its gay and pleasant side, these pages will show. Something of the serenity and good humour of the Chinese people, something of their friendliness, cheerfulness, and philosophical acceptance of the good and the ill which life brings, infected all the members of the ‘Hankow gang’ of war correspondents, among whom I lived for a few months, with whom I visited the Chinese fronts, and with whom I ‘tired the sun with talking’ through a long Chinese summer.
